Meet Author Andrea Wang | Storytime and Q&A

Sun., Oct. 23, at 3 pm | JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL STORYTIME with acclaimed author Andrea Wang at the Main Library. She will read Watercress and The Nian Monster, followed by a Q&A.

Watercress was awarded the 2022 Caldecott Medal, a Newbery Honor, the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, and a Boston Globe–Horn Book Honor. Her middle-grade novel, The Many Meanings of Meilan, was named a Best Book of 2021 by The New York Times. Wang’s other books, Luli and the Language of Tea, Magic Ramen, and The Nian Monster, have also received awards and starred reviews. She spent her childhood in Ohio and Boston and now lives in Colorado with her family.

CU Jazz Fest at the Library

LIKE JAZZ? So do we! Enjoy performances at the library as part of the Champaign-Urbana Jazz Festival: EIU Jazz Faculty Quintet will take the stage on Sunday, October 23, at 2 pm, and on Friday, October 28, you can spend a relaxing hour listening to a Jazz Duo in the Café starting at 4:30 pm.

CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN and autumn with a book “treat” to take home. Kids—from infants through grade 5—get to choose one free book during our weeklong Halloween Booktacular Giveaway at the Main Library and Douglass Branch from October 25–31. Just stop by and ask at the Children’s Desk!

Wed., Oct. 26, at 9:45 & 10:30 am | ENJOY STORIES, music, and movement for children ages 3 to 5, with a parent or caregiver. This 30-minute storytime emphasizes pre-reading skills and activities. We will parade through the Children’s area after. Costumes welcome! Main Library

Sat., Oct 29, from 2–4 pm | JOIN US for an afternoon of Halloween fun with spooky stories, creepy crafts, and ghoulish games. Pick up your free book (for infants through grade 5). Costumes and kids of all ages are welcome! Main Library

Crafty Adults | Cookies & Canvases

ONE OF OUR FAVORITE WORKSHOPS is back! Get cozy and join local artist Lori Fuller to create a beautiful acrylic painting. Fuller received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art Education and is currently pursuing a doctorate at the U of I School of Art + Design. Sign up for a session at the Main Library (Wed., Oct. 12, at 6 pm) or at the Douglass Branch (Sat., Oct 29, at 1 pm). Each workshop is limited to 30 participants. Registration opens October 1 at 9 am.
